Rev Caryll Brown

It’s forty-six years since my husband Richard and I married and made our home in Norfolk. We have four grown up children and six grandchildren and really treasure family life in all its up and downs.

We have worshipped at East Harling for over forty-two years enjoying a very busy lay ministry, together, with the children and young people of these communities for much of that time. Like Varlie, over the years I have also been involved in many other aspects of church and village life – church cleaning, flower arranging, events committee and PCC; in the village, Meals on Wheels Organizer and School Governor.

In 2008 I felt the call to ordained ministry and began training in 2010. I was ordained in 2013 as an OLM (Ordained Local Minister). I feel privileged to serve alongside such a dedicated team in such a beautiful Benefice as this. It is a joy to share the Christian message of hope in such a variety of ways and to have the opportunity to walk along side our parishioners in every aspect of their journey through life.

Rev Varlie Sheldrake

I’m one of the Ordained Local Ministers in the Benefice. Born and educated in Norwich, I've lived in Harling since 1972 and over the years have been involved in most aspects of village and church life - from cleaning and flower arranging to PCC member and secretary.

After retiring from secular employment - I was a nurse - I trained and was ordained in 2003 to serve in this United Benefice.

I have two adult children who are both married and live not too far away.

Now officially ‘retired’, I have Permission to Officiate, am a member of the Ministry Team and continue as before, preaching and leading worship across the Benefice. Much of my involvement is with the older members of the community but I am concerned that the Love of God is demonstrated and spread to all age groups and that the Church community is open and accessible to everyone.

Ministry Team

The ministry team is focussed on the spiritual / pastoral well-being of the benefice.  It is not a decision-making body, although it can make recommendations to the various PCCs.  It typically meets every 6-8 weeks and is comprised of the clergy (David, Caryll, Lynn, Varlie),  and lay members (Richard Oliver, Dorothy Scott & Stuart Langridge).

Lynn profile

Rev Lynn Fry

September 2016: I am returning to Papua New Guinea for an extended period and no longer have an active role in this Benefice.

I moved to Norfolk in the 1980s with my husband Tony and have brought up our family here. I originally trained as a chef, then went travelling and eventually went to University to train to be a teacher. I earn my living working in Tacolneston Primary School 5 days a week.

I trained and was ordained with Varlie in 2003. I have worked in the benefice ever since preaching and leading worship and co-ordinating the youth work.

I became a Christian when I was expecting my first child and was confirmed in Attleborough Church. The churches here have become an important part of my formation as a Christian - learning how to live together, how to accept difference and being willing to learn from each other.

For me, the Christian message is one of promise -  that things can be different,  that we can be freed from the things that bring us down and the promise that this is not all there is!

I returned from a year's sabbatical in PNG in mid 2015.
